Day 42 - At sea

Another sea day with our usual routines. This afternoon we had a special treat, well two really - the Entertainment team and Crew put on a Variety show and then Dom interviewed the Captain. First though there was the Freddy Mercury/Queen Name that tune quiz with Dom. Christine joined up with a lady who was also there on her own and between them they did OK. It was in this quiz that we found out how seriously some people take this quiz business. Marking the ladies wrong on Flash because they wrote Flash Gordon. Oh well they weren't in the running to win anyway.

The variety show was a laugh, and showed that members of the crew are multi talented. It started with the Entertainment team coming down the steps and up onto the stage dancing to Michael Jackson's Thriller. One of the team had trained as a dancer so he did a solo dance. Another has a great voice, so she sang. One of the bar staff did a great 'double' act, in a costume that was female on the left and male on the right. He walked on and started his song in profile on the female side, then jumped over when he got to the male part, then it was back and forth. It was very entertaining and funny, especially when he looked like he faced the wrong way and had to quickly jump back. We also saw 'the' cross dressing Queen performance by Paul and Dom, hilarious!

We stayed in the Palladium for the Captain's interview. Again pretty funny. Dom asked about family, the Captain has a wife and two daughters . He talked about going home and dropping towels on the floor in the bathroom and finding they were still there hours later. He also talked about meeting his wife, she is a classical musician from the Ukraine I think he said who worked on the ship for a while. The Captain was then an Officer and he would go to watch her play. One day he was in the lift with her and she said to her friend in Russian, 'that's the one I was telling you about, he gives me the creeps'. Which would have been fine except he also speaks Russian. Last time we were on a cruise we never saw the Captain and I can't say we ever heard him either but this Captain has, since Day 1 been very visible and has shown a really good sense of humour. After Dom finished his questions he asked the audience if we had any questions. One of these was around places the Captain hasn't been to that he would like to visit. We could tell he was thinking but couldn't come up with anything. Christine said 'Antarctica?', he looked kind of relieved and said that yes although he has flown over Antarctica he would like to go there while it is still unspoilt. Christine has been telling her quiz partners that at some point the answer is Antarctica.

We joined our table mates in the Meridian restaurant for dinner as usual, then afterwards we all went through to to Palladium theatre to see Tom O'Connor a well known British comedian. Now when I say well known, not by us until tonight. The Brits loved him, we thought he was OK, bit hard to follow Gareth Oliver. After the show we filled in time, taking a walk, playing the pokies, chatting. Just before 10.30, we headed up to the Crows Nest for the quiz. Tonight's quiz was weird to say the least. Some of the questions made no sense, were badly worded or were just wrong. One asked about the largest landlocked harbour in the world. The controversy over this question went on for days. We scored low but since the winner scored 9 we figured we didn't do too badly. After the quiz, we had our usual hot beverage with Mike and Janet then back to the cabin. Tomorrow is our last port, Lisbon.
